Isle of Wight

A-2-Sea has successfully completed the installation of two new 96 fibre subsea cables between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.

The project was undertaken for BT Plc and the MoD in preparation for two new aircraft carriers arriving at their home port of Portsmouth. The draft of these new carriers required a significant dredging of the passage into port – and it was across this route that BT’s existing fibre optic Isle of Wight telecommunication cables were laid. The cables were located and removed, and two new cables installed in a position further east and away from the carrier route into Portsmouth.

The scope of the contract covered:

  • Cable Route Study
  • Marine Survey
  • Burial Assessment Survey
  • Geotechnical Survey
  • UXO survey, mitigation and removal of identified ordnance
  • Manufacture of the subsea cable
  • Recovery of Out of Service Plant
  • Installation of the new cable routes
  • Cable jointing to BT land cable network
  • Post installation testing

The project demonstrated the broad skills, expertise and reputation that A-2-Sea can offer within the field of submarine cable installation

Cable installation was completed in early 2016 and both cable systems went live soon after. The cables are now in full service carrying the majority of BT’s traffic between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.
