A-2-Sea has successfully completed the installation of two new 96 fibre subsea cables between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
The project was undertaken for BT Plc and the MoD in preparation for two new aircraft carriers arriving at their home port of Portsmouth. The draft of these new carriers required a significant dredging of the passage into port – and it was across this route that BT’s existing fibre optic Isle of Wight telecommunication cables were laid. The cables were located and removed, and two new cables installed in a position further east and away from the carrier route into Portsmouth.

The project demonstrated the broad skills, expertise and reputation that A-2-Sea can offer within the field of submarine cable installation.
Cable installation was completed in early 2016 and both cable systems went live soon after. The cables are now in full service carrying the majority of BT’s traffic between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.
